EASIGEN-DS

EASIGEN-DS is leading the way in designing a pioneering distributed research infrastructure on advanced genomics, taking into consideration the existing capacities and avoiding overlap.

Concept

The challenges

  • Rapid evolution and innovation in the genomics field.
  • Highly fragmented European genomic sequencing capacity
  • High disparities in sequencing capacity and expertise across Europe
  • Low European competitiveness in the genomic technologies and services market
  • Still large gap between genomic information and clinical practice.
  • Lack of solid conceptual framework for omic data integration
  • Multidisciplinary genomics research for solving complex research questions.

EASIGEN Concept

We suggest an initial conceptual design for EASIGEN encompassing 1) a Technology Platform that will offer state-of-the-art genomic analysis instruments and methods, including data  analysis, as well as population-scale genomics capacity to European academic and bioindustry researchers; and 2) a genomics Support Platform that will provide support in quality and harmonisation of high throughput sequencing methods, training and  consulting for setting up and operating local and smaller genomics facilities, as well as an ecosystem for co-innovation with industry and a coordination point for EU and national stakeholders.

The pathway

EASIGEN follows the lifecycle approach for Research Infrastructures, as outlined by the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). This structured process ensures a solid foundation and adherence to the highest scientific and strategic standards.

Currently, EASIGEN is in the Design Phase, a crucial step in assessing the feasibility, structure, and long-term sustainability of this pioneering initiative.

Objectives

  • To develop an excellent technology and scientific design for a new Research Infrastructure on Advanced Genomics Technologies.
  • To design a robust and efficient operational framework for a new Research Infrastructure on Advanced Genomics Technologies.
  • To foster the engagement of relevant stakeholders and the research communities involved.

Work Packages

The EASIGEN-DS project is structured into six interconnected work packages (WPs), each playing a key role in shaping the future research infrastructure:
