WHO analysis highlights global inequities in genomics research
A recent global analysis conducted by the World Health Organization has brought attention to the inequities that continue to shape human genomics research worldwide.
After reviewing more than three decades of clinical genomics studies, the report shows that the majority of research activity remains concentrated in high‑income countries, while less than five percent originates from low‑ and middle‑income regions.
The analysis also highlights the underrepresentation of key population groups, including children, older adults, and individuals affected by diseases that are more prevalent in lower‑resource settings. These gaps limit the global relevance and applicability of genomic discoveries and risk reinforcing existing health disparities.
Ensuring that genomics research benefits all populations requires a more inclusive and globally representative approach. This objective aligns closely with the mission of EASIGEN‑DS, which is committed to helping bridge these gaps and contributing to a more connected and equitable genomics research landscape across Europe.
